With a dog on the road
As Van life keeps growing in popularity, more and more dogs, of all shapes and sizes, are being invited for the ride.
My partner and I share many of our travels with our high-energy Brittany dog - Rhéa. In fact we started traveling with her right from the very beginning. It’s a privilege and a great responsibility to have a dog on the road!
Ever since, we’ve taken her to multiple adventures with cars, vans and trains (even the Paris metro). We’ve been hiking, climbing, swimming and sightseeing together. Sleeping in hotels, motels, airbnbs and campgrounds. Including a trip from France all the way to Greece (and back) through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria.
Whether you’re considering full on #vanlife or you’re just an occasional traveler, considering taking a pet to join your adventures, I hope the lessons I’ve learned in the past few years can help you out.
Key points:
Dogs can make excellent companions. However, dogs are all individuals, so some will adapt better to this kind of lifestyle than others.
Make time for training and socialization before going on a journey together. Teach your dog the basic
Plan your trip according to the activities you can do with your doggie. If there are things you cannot do together, find ways to contain and entertain them.
Think about their exercise and recovery needs.
Plan to get some essential gear.
